"Houses, are but badly built boats so firmly aground that you cannot think of moving them. They are definitely inferior things, belonging to the vegetable not the animal world, rooted and stationary, incapable of transition. The desire to build a house is the tired wish of a man content thenceforward with a single anchorage. The desire to build a boat is the desire of youth, unwilling yet to accept the idea of a final resting-place."
Arthur Ransome captures it better than I can.
The allure of travel at its core is a hunger for the weird. I've wanted to do a big trip to the united states since I was a small boy and experience the manifestation of all the American culture I got drip fed as I grew up: Lonely diners on route 66 throwing light from their night shift windows, soaring condors over alpine mountains and the twisted comedy of American capitalism. I had ambitions in my youth of finding spiritual (and in my young pipe dreams literal) fortune on the lost continent, and with university finished I was willing to set aside the time to finally do it. The support too which I get from my family and friends in this journey fills me with the pride and humble gratitude that I can hope to repay in small part by taking you along with me.
This first post here marks the eve of my departure, and the excitement wells within me of an Adventure about to begin. Maybe you'll join me and follow my footsteps across the western USA. I'll be sure to keep the posts varied, and you can find them all here on this website. See you soon!
